Before arriving at Dismas House, Kristine had just completed a rehabilitation program. While she was hopeful about the future, there was still a lingering uncertainty. “I still felt lost and didn't know how to turn my dreams into reality,” she recalls.
For Kristine, Dismas became the first step toward building that reality. “I wanted to establish a solid foundation for my recovery and begin creating a life that was truly worth living.”
Since moving into Dismas, and now as one of the first residents to transition into one of the few Dismas Hub apartments, Kristine has found much more than just stability — she’s found belonging. “My favorite part of living at Dismas has been the connections I've formed, both within the house and in the community. I've gained a sense of belonging and significance, feeling like I am part of something truly meaningful.”
Along the way, she’s discovered something even more powerful: her purpose. “I struggled with this idea for so long, but now I am certain. My story and my life hold meaning and have the potential to inspire and help others.”
Today, Kristine is actively pursuing her education, working toward a degree in psychology with a specialization in addiction studies. She hopes to one day use both her academic knowledge and personal experiences to support others facing similar struggles. “Reflecting on my past and recognizing how far I've come keeps me grounded,” she says. “My dreams of helping others inspire me to keep moving forward.”
For Kristine, community has taken on a deeper meaning. “It's about forming connections with others who share similar experiences and values. Community provides a space where I feel valued, understood, and empowered. It’s a network of people who lift each other up, celebrate achievements, and offer help during tough times.”
When asked what she would tell someone considering Dismas, Kristine doesn’t hesitate. “It's a place of hope and transformation. It's an opportunity to connect with others who have faced similar challenges and to learn from their experiences. Dismas offers a supportive environment where you can grow, heal, and find your purpose.”
As Kristine continues her journey, she serves as a living reminder of the mission of Dismas House: creating a space where individuals can rebuild, rediscover, and reclaim their lives with dignity, hope, and purpose.
